SONG STORY – GODGIVEN BUTHELEZI
In this emotional Afropop single, South African artist Godgiven Buthelezi shares his real-life journey of pain, rejection, forgiveness, and ultimate triumph.
Born alongside his twin brother, Godgiven’s life changed at the age of two when his mother had a serious argument with his father. Following the dispute, she abandoned him and his twin brother, leaving them in the care of strangers before disappearing from their lives.
A close friend of his father later discovered the children’s whereabouts and informed their father, who immediately went to rescue them. From that day forward, Godgiven was raised by his grandmother from his father’s side, who became the mother figure he desperately needed.
Tragedy struck again when his father passed away while Godgiven was only ten years old. Despite growing up without both parents, he never gave up hope of finding his biological mother.
At the age of seventeen, Godgiven began searching for her and eventually found her in Ermelo, Mpumalanga. Initially, she accepted him and allowed him into her life. However, after only three months, she rejected him once again. In the presence of social workers and pastors, she denied that he was her son and declared in isiZulu:
“Anginaye mina umntwana onje!”
(“I do not have a child like this!”)
(“I do not have a child like this!”)
The social workers advised Godgiven to walk away because the woman clearly did not want to acknowledge him as her child.
Despite the heartbreak and rejection, Godgiven chose forgiveness over bitterness. Today, his mother finally acknowledges him as her son, and although she is now ill, he has forgiven her completely.
This song is not only Godgiven Buthelezi’s personal testimony, but also a message of hope to every child who has experienced rejection, abandonment, or neglect. It reminds listeners that their value is not determined by those who rejected them.
The song carries a powerful message:
“Nawe usazophumelela bese bayavela bathi, ‘Owakithi lona.’”
(“You too will succeed, and one day they will appear claiming that you belong to them.”)
Through heartfelt lyrics and uplifting Afropop melodies, Godgiven Buthelezi encourages every wounded child, abandoned son, and rejected daughter to keep moving forward because their future is greater than their past. Today Mr Godgiven Buthelezi is living peacefully in Durban.
